Every year fireworks at Sylvester cause a lot of eye damage in the Netherlands. This year the amount of people with eye damage increased once again compared to 2012. In 2012, 217 people landed in hospitals and 256 eyes had to be treated. This year 264 people and 324 eyes were injured. Most of the damage could have been avoided if all of them would have worn protection eyewear. 101 eyes had lasting damage, 54 eyes a loss of visus, 23 eyes became blind and 8 eyes had to be deleted. Dutch Independent Opticians tried to contribute to the publicity set up to inform people and avoid injuries with a major campaigns in the stores and at schools. The figures learn that this is still necessary.
